Rebecca Tripp with Nobuo Uematsu and Arnie Roth

The bulk of my inspiration comes from video game music.  There are some games that have soundtracks that have particularly inspired me.  The most prominent influence has been Final Fantasy.  Nobuo Uematsu is, simply put, my idol.  I adore him and his work.  But there are some other game composers whom I admire.  I have been equally inspired by Yasunori Mitsuda (particularly his sountracks for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, although Xenogears is up there too), Yoshino Aoki, the composer for the Breath of Fire series, Kumi Tanioka (Crystal Chronicles and some of Final Fantasy 11) and Hitoshi Sakimoto (especially his Odin Sphere and Final Fantasy 12 soundtracks). Kenji Yamamoto (Metroid series) has also been a notable influence on my style.  I have also gained a wealth of inspiration from Kojo Kondo- particularly his Zelda soundtracks.  Someone who has influenced me even more than those two is Koichi Sugiyama, the composer of the Dragon Quest soundtracks.  There are several other video game composer whom I admire and have likely been influenced by too. I would say that Nobuo Uematsu has probably influenced my work the most, but it is hard to say, since my style is very eclectic.

Classical music, new age music and world music are probably my favorite genres.  During my youth, I aspired to be like Gustav Holst. My Zodiac Suite is very heavily inspired by his music.  I am particularly enchanted with waltzes and arias. My work is also very inspired by Clannad and Enya. Some of my many favorite classical, European composers are Verdi, Grieg, Strauss II, Tchaicovsky and Mozart.  My work is probably somewhere between this romantic classical style and retro video game music like that of the Super Nintendo era.  There are also some modern classical composers who have influenced my work, including Howard Shore and Andreas Vollenweider.

One more source of inspiration for me has been rock music.  This is a very, very ambiguous genre, just like classical music is.  To be precise, the "rock" music that has inspired me most has been hippy music.  I love niche, psychedelic bands like It's a Beautiful Day, The Strawbs and Fever Tree.  Some more modern bands that have influenced me are Radiohead, Porcupine Tree and Massive Attack.
